Sunnah of Sleeping/Sone ka Sunnat Tarika

There are Sunnahs (recommended practices) in Islam for all aspects of living, including sleeping. Following the Sunnah for sleeping can bring blessings and spiritual benefits. Sunnahs of sleeping include:

1. Sleeping with Ablution/Wudu

Wudu, which is ritual ablution, purifies not only the body but also the soul. It prepares an individual to connect spiritually with Allah. In Islam, performing wudu is recommended before going to bed. Read dua for ablution before performing wudu.
Narrated by Al-Bara bin Azib: The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said,

“When you are ready for bed, perform wudu as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side and recite,

O Allah, I have surrendered myself to You. I turn my face towards You, entrust my affairs to You, and place my complete reliance on You, seeking Your reward and fearing Your punishment. There is no refuge and deliverer from (hardships) except You. I testify to my belief in Your revealed Book and Your Prophet whom You have sent.

If you die after reciting this, you will pass on the religion of Islam (as a Muslim)”

2. Sleeping on the Right Side

In Islam, sleeping on the right side is recommended, as in the above mentioned Hadith (Sahih Bukhari 6311). It is the sunnah practice of our beloved Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ). Sleeping on the right side has several health benefits.
Of course, there is no obligation to sleep on the right side in Islam. However, sleeping according to Sunnah is a good option for improving health and well being

3. Reciting Ayat ul Kursi Before Sleeping

Ayatul Kursi (Quran, 2:255) is considered one of the most essential and powerful verses of the Holy Quran. In Islam, there are numerous benefits of reciting Ayatul Kursi before sleeping.
In Hadith (sahih bukhari 2311), it is stated that if you recite Ayat ul kursi before going to bed, you will be protected by Allah and the devil will not come near you till morning.

4. Dusting the Bed Before Sleeping

Dusting the bed before sleeping is recommended in Islam to remove any insects or other unwanted creatures from the bed sheet that might have crawled during the night.
Narrated by Abu Huraira: The Prophet said,

When any of you intends to bed, he should shake his bed by using the inside of his waist sheet, because he has no idea what has come on to it after him, and then he should recite,

With Your Name, my Lord, I recline, and through Your Mercy, I shall rise. If You choose to take my soul, have mercy upon it; and if You choose to release it, protect it as You guard Your righteous servants.

5. Avoiding Sleeping on the Stomach

Sleeping on the belly or stomach is discouraged in Islam.
It was narrated that Abu Dharr said,

The Prophet(ﷺ) went by me, and I was lying on my belly. He gave me a foot poke and exclaimed, “O Junaidib! The inhabitants of Hell lay in this manner.

6. Reciting Last Two Verses of Surah Baqarah

The last two verses of Surah Baqarah are of great significance as these verses ask Allah for mercy, forgiveness, guidance and strength.
Narrated by Abu Mas’ud: The Prophet said,

If someone recited the last two Verses of Surah Al-Baqara at night, that will be enough for him.

7. Reciting Surah Ikhlas, Falaq and An-Nas Before Sleeping

Narrated by Hazrat Ayesha(رضی اللہ عنہا),

The Prophet(ﷺ),before going to bed, every evening, used to raise both hands and blow on them after saying Surat Al-Ikhlas and Surat Al-Falaq, then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he could rub, begining with his head, face and front of his body. The Prophet (ﷺ)used to repeat this three times.
